Deftly written, thoroughly researched, & highly recommended
An American Musical Dynasty: A Biography Of The Wolle Family Of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania by music historian and educator Paul S. Larson (Professor Emeritus, Moravian College, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) is a unique and fascinating historical examination and history of the Wolle family whose influential and enduring musical tradition was founded in the American colonial era of the 1700's. The rise of their music intertwined with the Moravian Church tells the history of the Moravian culture, as well as that of a very fine style of exquisite concert music. A Baby Born in Bethlehem
Published in Paperback by Albert Whitman & Co (September, 2001)
Authors: Martha Whitmore Hickman and Giuliano Ferri
Average review score:

A Very Special Christmas Story
Martha Whitmore Hickman stays very close to the bible story in every detail without making things too complicated for the little ones. The illustrations are light and glorious. This is just a perfect and very sweet re-telling of the Christmas Story. (If you have a child younger than three- I would also recommend "Christmas in the Manger" illustration by Felicia Bond.)

Bethlehem 2000
Published in Hardcover by Interlink Publishing (1998)
Authors: Mitri Raheb, Fred Strickert, and Garo Nalbandian
Average review score:

A book for the millenium that doesn't neglect social justice
This is a stunningly beautiful book, with a conscience. It is the most concise yet intensive orientation I can think of for either the student or the pilgrim seeking to understand the complexities of the Holy Land.

First though, it is a treat for the eyes. Nalbandian combines his own work--panoramic views of the city as well as striking character portraits and scenes from the Intifada--with selections from the 19th century for an absorbing visual display. They are alone comprehensive in portraying the cultural, religious, and political history of the people of Bethlehem and surrounding areas.

Yet, do not let these pictures distract you from the accompanying text. Raheb and Strickert have supplemented their commentary on Bethlehem's history and current events with several sidebars giving the reader an in-depth look at the origins of issues which have shaped Bethlehem. Perhaps the most vital of these is the story of Caliph Omar in the Church of the Nativity, a major determinant of relations between Christians and muslims in Bethlehem for centuries to come. Also included are selections from the Bible and Koran, regional poets, and a song for the Daheisha refugee camp. Examples of Arabic art and calligraphy are also included.

This is a book which follows the mystery of Christ's birth and the holy sites so many visitors come to see. But it is a book also about the people who continue to live and work in this place, who are so often forgotten among the ancient stones. The authors entreat you not to forget these struggling, strong people, the 'living stones' of the Holy Land.

Read this book for Christmas as the world contemplates that 'little town' of long ago, even if you never make a visit. If you are going to Bethlehem someday, read this book now. If you have been to Bethlehem already, read it and learn what you likely have missed on your journey. Seek to understand. Seek peace.

Bethlehem Bound: A Christmas Cantata Based on Luke 2:1-20

EASY CHOIR CHRISTMAS MUSICAL for worship services
Hi, my name is Pam Wilt and I wrote the music and lyrics for this cantata. This version is the music and cassette pack, it is also available w/o cassette.
I am shocked to find it on Amazon.com!
It was originally a Youth Musical for church choirs, (published by Abingdon Press, originally distributed by Cokesbury) called "Back To Bethlehem." This version is suitable for youth or adults (or both!) with some musical material expanded from the original and readings added in between the songs.
The "take" on this production is EMOTIONS! What a time it must have been -- everyone having to travel to get to the towns of their birth, frustrations of having to transport the elderly, the very young -- and expectant mothers! Joseph must have been SO frustrated at not being able to secure lodging at first! The shepherds must have been incredulously astonished at THEIR event, and their excitement is manifested by their song being ONE-LONG-RUN-ON-SENTENCE with barely anyplace to breathe!
Hope you check out this cantata, the music is in a contemporary style that youth and adults might enjoy, (you can say "bubble gum") :) (my favorite comment was when we were told the studio musicians said they liked playing it.) and is designed to be a "quick learn" musically. Perhaps watch for counterpoint of other songs woven into the score. Tempos on the recording are a little slow -- if you choose this feel free to pep it up -- give it life! :)
Many thanks for looking, Pam

Build Your Own Bethlehem: A Nativity Scene and Activity Book for Christmas Time
Published in Paperback by Liturgy Training Publications (September, 2002)
Authors: Gertrud Mueller Neslon, Peter Mazar, and Gertrud Mueller Nelson
Average review score:

Great Christmas book for children or adults
"Build Your Own Bethlehem" is a great little book for children or adults. It is beautifully illustrated & the figures are easy to assemble. The text ties the figures into Christian theology and worship & the figures can be used for the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Epiphany & the Presentation in the Temple
(Candlemas). Perfect for parents & children to work on together. It is the only nativity scene I have come across that includes Anna & Simeon from the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. The price is a bargain so I bought several to use as Christmas gifts.
